French WWI M1916 Fighting Knife

French WWI M1916 Fighting Knife, marked GONON on the ricasso— the trademark of Gonon-Chasengue et Fils. It comes complete with its original steel scabbard that has been repainted black. Known as Le Vengeur de 1870 (“The Avenger of 1870”), this model symbolized France’s resolve after the 1870 defeat to Prussia. Following France’s collapse in 1940, many M1916s were captured by Germany and later saw service in Norway, with further testing in Sweden post-war. This knife features the classic double-edged spear-point blade. The steel crossguard remains straight and bears the “B and star” acceptance mark, showing light staining and oxidation. Its walnut grip displays a warm patina with no cracks or chips, and the handle is solidly fitted to the tang.
