Damascus Saxon Sabre by Neumann

This is a superb and impressively heavy mid-19th century Saxon officer’s presentation sabre, featuring a true patterned Damascus blade, lavish blue-and-gold etching, and an inscription to the original owner. Made by H. Neumann, Hoflieferant, Berlin, one of the finest court suppliers of the period, this sword represents the highest grade of craftsmanship available to German officers prior to Imperial unification. The gilt brass hilt is richly ornamented in the distinctive Saxon style, with finely chiselled floral motifs and a powerful lion-head pommel with red glass eyes. The grip is wrapped with ray skin and twisted wire, all intact and undisturbed. The langet displays the typical crossed swords emblem associated with Saxon officers. The backside of the hilt is engraved with the officer’s name. The broad Damascus blade has massive, thick-spined, and clearly patterned. It retains extensive panels with gold decoration, including scrolling floral work and framing motifs. The reverse bears a further gilt inscription and decorative cartouches reading “Eisenhauer Damaststahl”. The spine is neatly marked: “H. NEUMANN, HOF-LIEFERANT, BERLIN” attesting to manufacture by one of Berlin’s prestigious court outfitters. Complete with its original steel scabbard, which shows honest age patina and fits the blade perfectly. Transformed scabbard with one ring period removed. Both scabbard screws are in place. This sword has a total length of 100cm.
